He still has a few presentations and a test, but this is it. When I pull up to the curb to pick him up in the rain it will be in many ways at the <strong>completion</strong> of the task he moved across the country to <strong>begin. </strong>To say I&#8217;m proud of Joe is such an understatement. Such an understatement, in fact that its hard for me to even say it out loud to him. I wouldn&#8217;t want him to think I am trivializing his excellence by using such a trite expression, not to mention an expression that implies personal ownership of his success. </p> <p>But really we did it together. Not to say we couldn&#8217;t have done it alone, but what a gift that we didn&#8217;t have to. Joe will begin two internships in his field in the coming weeks, as required by his degree program. I literally just got chills thinking of the transition he is about to undergo. Waking up every morning and heading off to REALLY DO IT. Its just so amazing. </p> <p>I know that jobs are jobs. I know that Joe will experience ups and downs in his career as a city planning professional. But I also know that one day when we are raising our children we will have a special gift for them, a parable of sorts. A story that goes &#8220;You can love many things, you can be passionate about many things. In fact, we want you to spread yourself thin while you&#8217;re young. Love it all, try everything. And know that, like your grandparents were there for us, we will be there for you. Want to be in a rockband? Here&#8217;s a piano/guitar/microphone/spandex-unitard! Do it big. Want to be an actor? We&#8217;ll see every play, we&#8217;ll read every book. Hell, Dad will be the music director in a pinch and Mom will choreograph! Want to be a city planner now? Great, we&#8217;ll never stop playing your old CD&#8217;s but we&#8217;ll help you move on. Because you don&#8217;t have to give anything up to grow-up. I decided to take a mini-vaction from guilt. I finished my last of three finals in one week, all of which counted for 100% of my grades in their respective classes, on Friday.</p> <p>When I walked out of the law school I promised myself Friday and Saturday &#8220;off&#8221; from pressure and guilt. What this looked like ultimately was a lot of napping, some junk food eating, a few (well deserved) drinks, a great workout, time with friends &#8220;garage sale-ing&#8221; and some more napping.</p> <p>I woke up this morning feeling like a new person.
